Canada/Russia game stops two nations

When Canada and Russia square off in Wednesday's quarter-final game in men's hockey at the Olympics, two nations will come to a virtual stand-still.

The game means as much to Russian hockey fans as it does to us here in Canada.

Bruce Hamilton, president and general manager of the Kelowna Rockets is no different.

"I'll be glued to it (television)," says Hamilton, who will head to Vancouver tomorrow where he has tickets for the semi-finals, bronze medal and gold medal game.

Hamilton hopes he will get a chance to see a pair of Rockets alumnus in Canadian defencemen Duncan Keith and Shea Weber.

"They have both played extremely well and they are getting lots of ice time," says Hamilton who adds former Rocket Lauris Darzins is also having a good tournament with Latvia.

Hamilton says he is not surprised Canada and Russia are meeting in the quarter-finals as opposed to the final.

He says he doesn't fall into the trap that many Canadians do in thinking it would be a cakewalk to the final.

"There are a lot of good teams at the Olympics. No matter who Canada plays, that teams gives it their best. You can't underestimate how good these teams are."

Hamilton says in Canada's 8-2 win over Germany, the Germans had some good chances to score when Canada was up just 1-0.

"If they scored there, who knows what would have happened."

He says Canada was bound to meet Russia sometime and it might as well be now.

Regardless of who wins Wednesday, one thing is certain, there will be a lot of finger pointing and second guessing in the country which doesn't win.
