UBC Okanagan

Time:
International Day for Nonviolence - Anniversary of the birth of Gandhi

Social Justice WORKSHOPS

When: Saturday 4 October

Where: UBC Okanagan (Arts Building 108 and 109)

9:30am - “India: Defying the Crown” (film)

From the A Force More Powerful Series, this film documents the Satyagraha Namak, or Salt March, which was led by Mohandas K. Gandhi.

10:00am - Session 1: Sustaining the Energy to Keep Doing Activism.

Facilitator – Nythalah Baker, UBC Okanagan

Contributing to social change movements can be incredibly rewarding and inspiring. Realizing social justice can also be difficult; the work often goes up stream and it takes time to see noticeable changes. This workshop will look at the meaning of social justice work and ways to sustain hope while continuing to contribute to social change.

Session 2: Do You Walk Your Talk? Going Beyond the One Tonne Challenge

Facilitator - Wilma van der Veen , Okanagan College (Sociology/Women’s Studies)

Living in ecological harmony is one fundamental component of the vision of Nonviolence. From exploring everyday activities in your life to philosophical ideas of the value you place on various life forms, you will reflect on what is your relationship with and your commitment to a healthy mother earth, and what you can do to act more on your principles.

11:30am - Session 3: Community, Arts, and Action

Facilitator – Jake Kennedy (OC, English)

This session examines examples of artistic activism and community building, as well as the politics of creative forms of activism that seek to expose and illuminate injustice, oppression, and inequality.

Session 4: 2010: Understanding Resistance to the Vancouver Olympics

Facilitator – Alex Dundas (UBC O, Cultural Studies student)

This will be an info session (drawing from the knowledge of the group) exploring the opposition to the Vancouver Olympics. Topics: what the Olympics represents, connections to other social movements, and the damage that the Olympics will cause to different groups.

12:30pm - COMMUNITY LUNCH – please bring food for yourself and/or to share, as well as reusable dishes/utensils.

1:30pm - Session 5 - Nonviolence 101: An Introduction to Nonviolent Direct Action

This session will provide an introduction to nonviolent noncooperation and direct action in North America, drawing on examples from the US Civil Rights movement, ecological movements, anti-war struggles, and anti-poverty struggles to explore the wide variety of nonviolent tactics. As well, we’ll explore the philosophy and ethics of nonviolence.

3:00pm - The Fourth World War (2003, Film)

While our airwaves are crowded with talk of a new world war, narrated by generals and filmed from the noses of bombs, the human story of this global conflict remains untold. The Fourth World War brings together the images and voices of the war on the ground. It is a story of a war without end and of those who resist.
