Getting into the swim of things with English Channel Master
The 2008 Apple Open Water Challenge in Kelowna will give all those with water wings the opportunity to test those lungs, legs and arms. The FINA recognised 1.5km race to be held on Friday evening, August 15 , 7:00 pm at Tugboat Beach is for those who like speed; the 5km held at 10:00 am the next morning is for those who have a little more stamina. According to FINA’s website “Open water competitions are defined by FINA since 1985 as those taking place in rivers, lakes or seas.” They mention the crossing of the English Channel as “One of the most significant examples of this conception....” With local open water hero Brent Hobbs of Okanagan Masters Swim Club, who has just successfully crossed the English Channel as Meet Manager of this event, participants can look forward to some exciting feedback from him. Brent crossed the Channel in 10 hours 43 minutes while the first person who finally succeeded was Englishman Matthew Webb on August 24, 1875, in a time of 21 hours and 45 minutes.
