The best young athletes from all corners of our province will gather in Kelowna in the heat of competition and the warmth of our community's hospitality. This is truly an exciting time for sport in British Columbia. Our province is on the verge of hosting the world's top athletes in 2012 and our young athletes are on the threshold of breaking through to the national and international stage. "For some athletes, the journey begins today as they train to be chosen to compete among the best in our province in 2008," says City of Kelowna Mayor Sharon Shepherd. "I am proud of our city's commitment to increase physical activity rate of our citizens by 20 per cent by the year 2010. And you'll agree with me, it will be our young people passionate about play that will lead the way." The Games will generate approximately $2.2 million in direct spending in our community. The City of Kelowna is proud to provide the Games with first-class outdoor and indoor facilities which will showcase nearly 4,000 athletes who will come to compete. School District #23 is providing use of school facilities, including gymnasiums for sports, classrooms for dormitories and buses for transportation. Sport builds communities. Young people, their parents and coaches, volunteers, sponsors and supporters are brought together by sport. During the 2008 Summer Games people will come together for sport on the fields, on the diamonds and inside the arenas and will leave not just as neighbours, but also as friends. Indeed, sport has the power to unite us, no matter what our background is. |
