The Cakewalk is an experiment birthed from the union between The City of Kelowna’s Cultural Services ambassadors and it’s fantastically deep, talent pool of artists. These noble parties came to two respective exciting epiphanies following a focus group pertaining to the current and future states of downtown district. The first being that the ever expanding art and culture scene has a general feeling of disenchanted frustration towards Kelowna’s nightlife; more specifically it’s provisions for for the fun seekers outside of top 40 R&B catwalk clubs, historically not popular establishments among the right side brain set. The second being that there are wonderful people who work in official capacities with the City who are listening to these dissatisfied voices, people who recognize Kelowna’s accelerated growth and promising potential for artistic accomplishment. And so what seemed to be an obvious arrangement was struck: the City of Kelowna’s Cultural Services offered to provide venues as a recurring forum for any and all kinds of art, with the promise from representatives that the local musicians, artists, and crafters would happily stage their set and peddle their wares together in a show of solidarity. An open call for keen parties was trumpeted across the land! We are trying with all our might to avoid exclusivity and nepotism, and we hope all walks will contribute and attend, from families with their children and the singing dancing late risers. It is the civic duty of anyone who has bellyached or ballyhooed about the downtown scene to come down and prove to the City of Kelowna that there is a constantly growing movement of local citizens and big city refugees alike who are interested in working together to bring a touch of color to the pale cheeks of the city.

This event is made possible by the efforts of Sheila Olcen, Cultural Development Supervisor; Risti Nykiforuk, Kelowna Museum Events; and Shauna Oddleifson, Kelowna Cultural Services. Humberto Morales, OKBC-TV has provided internet promotion and volunteers to capture the action. Jason George, Fairshake Productions is providing sound equipment and Kaylub, Eardrum Valley is providing sound engineer expertise. The event is being curated by the joint efforts of many people, including Gabe, Kyle, Rio, Ryan, Kelly, Kaylub and Conor, all of whom can be reached at ourcakewalk@gmail.com.
