Westside fire put to rest

2:45 update: At approximately 12:30pm West Kelowna Fire Rescue and BC Wildfire Management crews were able to complete the hand-guard around the perimeter of the fire. At approximately 2:30pm all crews have been released from the fire scene. All visible hot-spots have been thoroughly overhauled. As a precaution West Kelowna Fire personnel will make periodic patrols along the edge of the fire over the next 12 to 24 hours. A hose-lay has been left in place along the top of the fire, in event that crews need to manage any hot-spots.

8 a.m. UPDATE: The Kalamoir Park fire, which began Saturday evening around 8:45 pm, has been 50 percent contained as of this morning, though crews are still being called out to assist with mop and control according to Kamloops Fire Information Centre.

Investigation into the cause of the blaze, which resulted in the temporary evacuation of several residences in that area, is underway today.

According to a spokesperson at the Kamloops centre, the area in which the fire is located posed some difficulties for crews who were on hand during the night.

"Some of the fire has extreme slope, so crews didn't fight that overnight," explained Michaela Swan, information officer for the Kamloops Fire Information Centre.

"This morning, crews are on site for mop-up and control," she added.

At this point, there is no estimate of the size of the area destroyed or damaged during the blaze, which at first was spreading rapidly, but was quickly brought under control by responding fire crews Saturday night.

8:50 p.m. update: Kamloops Fire Information Officer, Michaela Swan, confirmed two aircraft are actioning the fire. Swan says the fire is estimated at two hectares in size and was burning quite aggressively. There are structures in the area.

A Bell 212 helicopter is dropping water and a bomber has been called in.

Lakeview Road is now closed to traffic.

Fire crews have been called out to a fast moving brush fire south of Casa Loma near Kalamoir Park.

Smoke from the fire can be seen for several kilometres.
