UPDATE: Durayal Alo, the man arrested and injured at the scene says he was released without charges after police and K-9 units were unable to find anything illegal during the search of his vehicle.
Calls to the RCMP regarding the reasons Alo was arrested were not immediately returned.
A Kelowna RCMP member was in the process of arresting a man on drug charges late Friday morning on Rutland Road when both the officer and the suspect were struck by a second vehicle that was passing by.
The officer and the man he was arresting were at the back of the officer's marked car when an older, full-size pickup clipped them both with the passenger’s side view mirror, damaging the open door of the RCMP vehicle in the process.
“It was a slow hit,” said Cst. Lise Marion, “but still struck the policeman and the person he was arresting.”
“Minor injuries were sustained by the police officer and the arrestee, and some damage to the police vehicle as well.”
Cst. Marion believes the elderly driver of the late model pickup misjudged the distance and added that when a driver sees an emergency vehicle they are either to stop or allow a lot of room.
“He didn’t (do that),” said Cst. Marion.
The driver of the pickup was given a ticket for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, which carries a $109 fine.
“It’s for the safety of everyone,” said Cst. Marion. “When we’re doing our job we want to know that we’re not going to be hit. When you see an emergency vehicle with lights on, slow down and give them room.”
