Drowning victim identified

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man whose body was recovered from Wood Lake near Kelowna on June 29, 2013. He is George Matthew Klein, aged 42, from Whitehorse, Yukon.

Mr. Klein was with a large party of extended family members on the beach at Wood Lake near the Kokanee Beach Resort on the afternoon of June 29. Some of the youngsters with the group, including two of Mr. Klein's sons, were swimming and playing in the water when they were caught up in an undertow where Vernon Creek empties into Wood Lake.

A number of adults in the party entered the water to help the boys, including Mr. Klein who dove in from a dock. The boys were all safely rescued, but Mr. Klein did not re-surface.

Vernon Search and Rescue located the body with underwater sonar and held it in place until the RCMP dive team arrived to make the recovery on Saturday, just before 6 p.m.

Klein's body was located in a depth of 16 feet of water about 50 feet from the south shore of Wood Lake.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death
