Caged pets taken for a ride

12:35 p.m. This photo, shot by a concerned driver on Highway 97 yesterday, is the subject of some controversy regarding the health, welfare and safety of animals being transported.

Nevertheless, and in view of the fact that these particular animals are being transported outside of this vehicle, a spokesperson for the SPCA in Kelowna suggests it is the safest manner in which to provide transportation,.... perhaps just not the exposure to the elements factor.

"A securely fastened crate is how we want animals to be transported, but not necessarily on the outside," explained Kaylyn Robinson, a three-year employee with the Kelowna SPCA.

That was before the SPCA had a chance to see the photos, now they have the whole picture they say this is definutley not OK. If it was in the back of a pick-up truck it is a good way to transport animals, but not hanging off the end of a bumper.

"Our biggest concern is that they (animals) are secure, that they won't fall off," she added.

Robinson says they are also concerned about these particular animals' exposure to the elements while riding in such a fashion.

Charryll, who took the photos, says, "I could not believe my eyes today (June 27) following this vehicle out of Penticton. The dog in the large kennel was going around and around in there. That poor dog was likely scared to death. My hope is this vehicle doesn’t get rear-ended!"
