Live music this week

Going to see a live music show is a sensory delight – the creativity and passion of musicians, people-watching at the venue, the rhythms and melodies pouring forth… After the rains of last week, I am guessing you’re as ready for entertainment, and you’re in luck: there is a wide assortment of live music shows to be enjoyed in Kelowna this week. Here’s a run-down of a few concerts.

June 24, 2013 – Tonight at the Minstrel Café and Bar, Sheryl Crow’s former guitarist takes to the stage. Todd Wolfe brings his unique mix of bluesy music influenced by such well-known 60s bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Fleetwood Mac. The tunes will be rockin’ and reviews from other communities have been glowing. There’s a $10 cover charge, and you can phone the Minstrel at 250-764-2301 for more information. There is live music schedule several times this week (different bands), so check the Minstrel Café’s calendar of events for details.

June 26, 2013 - The Kelowna City Concert Band presents BRASS-travaganza in the Park. This is a free summer concert at the Island Stage in Waterfront Park, and will run weather permitting. Bring your own lawn chair. The show begins at 7:00 pm.

Meanwhile, over at the Blue Gator, the popular Blues Night with Poppa Dawg runs from 9:00 pm to closing. There is no cover charge for this show featuring new songs every time they play. The Calgary Sun calls this act "an unbelievably talented group". Memphis to Motown.

June 26 is an incredibly high-energy music night in Kelowna! The Kelowna Community Theatre is featuring five-time Grammy-winning musician Ziggy Marley at 8 pm on June 26. Marley is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and he and his siblings first sat in on recording sessions with his father's band, the legendary Bob Marley and the Wailers when he was just ten years old. Later Ziggy joined with his sisters Sharon and Cedella and brother Stephen to become Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers allowing him to craft his own soulful sound which blends blues, R&B, hip-hop and roots reggae. Phone the Kelowna Community Theatre for more information at 250-762-5050, or get tickets at selectyourtickets.com.

June 28, 2013 - The 4th annual Lille Gard Festival runs from June 28 -30th at Bottega Farm Inn. This 3 day, family-friendly music and arts festival is organized by TribeHouse Artist Collective and features visual arts, dance, speakers, spoken word, and music. The festival begins with an amazing event called Ten Ten Ten - ten diverse performers are given Ten minutes to perform and the event costs just $10 to attend. It features Sandra Babbel, Caroline Mackay, Brent Tyler, Creators Dancers and others. The festival then continues over the next two days with a wide array of talented bands and performers including Jacob Moon, Cod Gone Wild, The Trips, Ari Nuefeld, Ktown Blues Revue, Ezra Kwizera, Russ Rosen, Cowboy Bob, David Ruis, among other acts. There will also be an art gallery with interactive art, and food and drinks served all day.
