Suspect arrested in shooting

Update 11:40 a.m.: Kamloops RCMP have a man in custody in connection with a shooting incident in the city Tuesday night. The unidentified man was arrested Wednesday morning without incident.

Kamloops RCMP are currently searching for a suspect in the accidental shooting of a woman which occurred in a quiet neighbourhood in this interior city.

A violent altercation between two men in the upstairs suite of a house lead to a gun being discharged into the floor and an innocent 25-year-old woman being hit in the arm by a bullet while she was sitting in her suite located directly below the shooting scene.

Police were notified just before 6:20 PM Tuesday that a woman living in the basement suite had been shot in the arm and that the bullet was believed to have come from the upstairs suite where a gunshot had been heard.  The woman was in the suite with her 32-year-old husband and five-year-old daughter at the time.

She was taken to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops with what was described as a non-life-threatening injury to her arm.

Police converged on the scene and went to the upstairs suite where they located a 34-year-old man and a 19- year-old woman.  The male is believed to be one of the two men involved in the initial altercation and the female is an acquaintance known to both men.

Both the man and the young woman were brought to the Kamloops RCMP detachment for questioning in connection with the incident.

The details surrounding the argument remain unclear but the investigation to date suggests that both men were known to each other.  The suspect believed to be associated to the firearm is well known to police and has a history of violence, property crime and drug related offences.

Currently, uniformed officers are guarding the shooting scene and investigators from the major crime unit have been called in.  Forensic identification specialists have also been notified.

Uniformed and plainclothes investigators are on alert for the suspect and surrounding detachments have been notified of this incident. He is described as being a stocky 34-year-old white male who is 6 feet tall, weighs 181 pounds and has green eyes, brown hair and a prominent tattoo of the word “Quinn” on the right side of his neck.

Anyone with information about this suspect is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP or Crimestoppers.
