A local Special Olympian helped to kicked off the Safeway's Easter Seals and Special Olympics campaign, this past Friday in Kelowna.
Katarina Gerhardt, who is also a Safeway employee, has been an athlete for more than 20 years, participating in different sports ranging from cross-country skiing to rhythmic gymnastics. She also won gold in cross-country skiing at the 2009 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho.
Now she is sharing her memories of participating in Easter Seals camps in hopes of building awareness around her experiences so that others like her will be provided with the same opportunities.
“It was great to be there and see other people,” she says of her years at the Easter Seals Camp Winfield in the Okanagan Valley
From March 29 to April 30, Safeway customers who donate two dollars to support Special Olympics and Easter Seals will receive five bonus AIR MILES Reward Miles. Last year, the campaign raised more than $1.6 million to support Special Olympics athletes and programs and Easter Seals camp experiences for children with disabilities.
"One hundred per cent of all funds raised go directly to support our programs and help local families," says Megan Grittani-Livingston Manager of Communications for Special Olympics British Columbia.
Since 2008, more than $6 million has been raised for Easter Seals and Special Olympics through the partnership with Safeway.
