Art showcase at Shoparama

Okanagan artists of all kinds are at the Vernon Recreation Centre this weekend for Shoparama. The event features a wide variety of art forms, from entrepreneurs and home based business, to baking and preserves, clothing and textiles, jewellery, pottery, crafts, and various mediums of art work.

West Kelowna resident, George Philp, is the creator of Simply Salsa. He says he decided to start his business four years ago when he noticed there wasn't a lot to choose from in the local market. Starting off with a simple red salsa, he has now expanded into other flavours like black bean and corn, mango, and cranberry salsa for the holidays. Philp said he likes to attend Shoparama to keep in touch with his Vernon customer base.
"I do the farmer's markets in Vernon on Monday and Thursday, so this allows me to prime the pump so to speak, and reconnect with my regular customers so they know I'm here again this year."
Also on hand is local author, Elliott Cross. Cross moved to Salmon Arm from England almost 14 years ago at the age of 16 and says he always wanted to be an author. He is at Shoparama to market the first two books in a five-book series, which he likens to Game of Thrones meets Ancient Rome. Cross is self published, and his first book entitled Faithful Amidst the Fallen has sold over a thousand copies since 2011.
"[Shoparama] is good venue to meet people, interact with my readers, and get feedback if they have read the book, and if not, encourage them to take a shot on a new author. The event organizer, Ingrid Baron, put on a great event" said Cross.
It's not too late to attend! Shoparama is continuing today between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to support the local food bank.
