La Cage, remade as the 1996 American film “The Birdcage” starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane, tells the story of Georges, the owner of a glitzy nightclub in lovely Saint- Tropez, and his partner Albin, who moonlights as the glamorous chanteuse Zaza. When Georges' son brings his fiancée's conservative parents home to meet the dramatic pair, the bonds of family are put to the test as the feather boas fly!
Winner of three 2010 Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical, this flashy comedy made Tony Awards history as the first show ever to win the Tony Award three times for best production.
The story: Boy (Jean-Michel), madly in love with girl (Anne), tells parents (George and Albin) of his engagement. Problem: Jean-Michel’s parents are gay; Anne doesn’t know; and her dad (M. Dindon, who is head of the “Tradition, Family and Morality Party”) and mom are about to meet Jean-Michel’s parents. George and Albin run the St. Tropez drag nightclub, La Cage aux Folles, where Albin stars as Zaza, and M. Dindon’s stated goal is to close down drag nightclubs.
Randy Leslie is Albin who becomes the fabulous Zsa Zsa onstage at the nightclub La Cage aux Folles. No one in the market can belt out a tune quite like him. His incomparable voice has graced the stage of well over 100 productions in the last 40 years in Kelowna, Toronto and Ottawa.
The extraordinary twists and turns of the characters, the phenomenal score, tend to sweep the audience along. The play is hilarious, as artistic director Randy Leslie said “George, Albin and Jean-Michel, even though it doesn’t look that way, are a traditional family in a non-traditional way. The family is just family.”
This production is directed by James Long with music director Roslyn Frantz, and choreographer Nathan Flavel. Costume Design by Hazel Rodgers and Nathan Flavel. Hair and Makeup by Valeh Ashraf and Set Decor by Norene Morrow.
