Man in coma after hit with skateboard

A 46-year-old Mackenzie man is in critical condition with a coma after he was hit in the head by a skateboard outside a 7-Eleven convenience store in Kamloops.

The incident happened around 6:15 p.m., in the 1700 block of Tranquille Road when a man got into an altercation with a group of teenagers who were jaywalking across the road. He was inside an older model red Ford Expedition that drove by and honked at the youth.

One of the people inside the truck reportedly believed one of the skateboarders had struck the vehicle with an object as it passed.

Sgt. Grant Learned of the Kamloops RCMP says the vehicle drove into the parking lot of the 7-eleven and a man got out of the vehicle and allegedly shoved a 17-year-old female to the ground and began moving towards a 15-year-old male, yelling aggressively in a heated verbal exchange.

“When the older man moved towards the youth, the 15-year-old struck the man in the head with his skateboard. The man collapsed to the ground and never regained consciousness."

The 15-year-old was arrested at the scene and taken to the RCMP detachment where he was later released to his guardian. No charges have been laid, but the incident is being investigated as an aggravated assault with a weapon.

There has been no reported change in the victim’s medical condition since he was admitted to hospital.
