Rally marks end of smart meter hearings
2013 Smart Meter Rally
A large rally was held outside the Holiday Inn in Kelowna Friday as two weeks of hearings in FortisBC's application for smart meter technology wrapped up.
Meetings were conducted by the BC Utilities Commission to obtain public input into the application.
The rally was held by those against an application that would allow FortisBC to install the contentious technology in homes around the province.
"We've had our opportunity for the last two weeks to make a presentation against their applications. We've heard from a number of scientists and doctors. Today was Dr. David O. Carpenter," says rally spokesperson, Barb Makota.
"Today we are rallying in support of no smart metres but we're also rallying in support of Eunice Sinclair from Citizens for Safe Technology who presented 35,000 signatures against smart meters to NDP critic John Horgan who presented them to the legislature on Monday."
Makota and her group are mainly concerned about the smart meter system and its frequencies, which they believe can affect people's health.
She claims there is too much evidence that it's a 'risky business' to proceed with.
The BC Utilities Commission is expected to issue a ruling in a couple of months on whether FortisBC can go ahead and install smart meters whether people want them or not.
