Banner weekend for Kelowna hoops
Three banners will will raised to the rafters at two local high schools following victories at provincial A and AA Basketball Championships over the weekend.
Immaculata will hang two of those banners after both the girls and boys teams were victorious at their respective A championships.
The number two ranked girls defeated number one ranked and host Cedars Christian of Prince George 58-54 in the tournament final.
Trailing 46-44 early in the final quarter, Immaculata went on an 8-0 streak to take a six point lead. They were never challenged after that.
Not to be outdone, the Immaculata Mustang boys, ranked number five in the province heading into the provincial championship in Abbotsford knocked off two higher seeded teams to earn their BC title.
After opening the tournament with an 81-52 win over Glenlyon Norfolk the Mustangs took on the role of giant killers.
They dispatched number four ranked Unity Christian 63-56 in the quarter-finals then took down the top ranked West Point Grey Academy 54-46 in the semi's.
The Mustangs completed their run to a provincial title with a 67-51 win over St. Patrick's in the title game.
St. Pat's came in ranked sixth.
Kelowna Christian School Knights (KCS), perennial contenders for the A boys title moved up a notch and captured the AA crown over the weekend in Kamloops.
The Knights knocked off both the number one and number two teams in the province en route to the championship.
They beat the number two ranked Brentwood College 58-47 in Saturday's championship game in Kamloops.
The Knights reached the championship game by knocking off number one ranked Holy Cross 67-54.
KCS was ranked number seven heading into the provincial finals.
The squad, which won the BC A Boys title a year ago, were playing at the AA level for the first time.
Drew Schulz was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player while teammate Ryan Linttell was voted to the First All-Star Team.
