A family of three from Cherryville are being hailed as heroes after pulling 77-year-old Margaret Hollingsworth from her burning car after it crashed into a tree on Highway 6 near Cherryville last week.

Daniel Balcaen, his fiancé Diane Meda and her son Kevin Meda were driving east when they happened upon the scene.

The two men were able to get Hollingsworth out of the vehicle and she was taken and treated at Vernon Jubilee Hospital with only minor injuries.

When Lumby RCMP arrived on scene they found a 1988 Oldsmobile fully engulfed in flames.

"Two passing motorists... put themselves at risk to bend back the door frame and extract the driver from the vehicle that was already on fire," says Cpl. Proce.

"They undoubtedly saved the driver's life by removing her form the vehicle in the nick of time."
