The owner of the Fintry Queen, Andy Schwab appeared at the District of West Kelowna’s council meeting Tuesday night to anchor down a location for the paddle-wheeler.

Schwab was floating the idea to dock the vessel at the CNR Wharf in Gellatly Bay. The captain says the Fintry Queen would create a waterfront destination, be economical through direct jobs, and spin offs. He believes the vessel would be a good focal point for the community.

According to Schwab, the Fintry Queen has economical twin diesel engines and is 140’ long. The vessel can carry up to 325 patrons. In the future he would like the Fintry Queen to have docking locations in West Kelowna, Westbank, Kelowna, Peachland, and Penticton.

Councillor Rick de Jong says, “(It's) an interesting opportunity for the local community to see a piece of heritage floating up and down (Okanagan Lake). I would certainly be more interested in a sailing vessel then another stationary (one) in West Kelowna.”

De Jong was referring to one of Schwab's ideas to park the 'Queen' and make it a museum or restaurant.

Council had two main concerns:

• lack of parking the Gellatly Bay
• the wharf has been used by the people of West Kelowna as a swimming area.
   

Mayor Doug Findlater says, “I think it’s actually a bigger project to accommodate this than we realize in terms of the redesign…and addressing parking issues.”

Council moved that Mr. Schwab’s proposal be referred to staff for further consideration, they also asked for a report back on parking and safety issues.
