The revitalization of Penticton’s downtown is expected to start with upgrades to the 200 block of Martin Street next fall.
The city council approved plans for the project to move ahead this week, following a presentation by the Downtown Revitalization Select Committee.
“We are very excited this is moving ahead as are the motivated property owners on Martin Street, in what is considered an addition to the entertainment district of the city,” said Kerri Milton, executive director for the Downtown Penticton Association.
The first phase of the project including the 200 block of Martin Street and Westminster Avenue costs $1.25 million.
Highlights of the work that will start on Martin are improved parking and roadways and patio space and new lighting for existing businesses.
Part of the patio space will be sloped road parking, so there will be room for parking when businesses bring tables back in.
Work will also be done to bring in new businesses where there are currently empty spaces.
The project is starting in the fall so as not to interfere with tourist season.
The reason it is beginning on Martin Street is because it is doable at this time and there are traffic flow issues to be dealt with on Main Street.
Councillor Judy Sentes said she fully supports the plan.
“While everyone would prefer Main Street to be the starting point, there are many more business owners involved and we need time to find common ground,” she said. “Martin Street gives us the opportunity to show the community we really mean business and are committed to the revitalization.”
Plans are for revitalization to be done down the road on Main Street and in other areas of the city.
