Heritage BC gets half a million dollars

Historical societies across the province received some good news this afternoon. The provincial government will be providing $500,000 to Heritage BC to help local governments and organizations protect heritage buildings and historical sites around the province.

Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations was on hand to make the announcement at Kelowna’s Benvoulin Church, which was built in 1892.

"Historic places are an important part of BC's past, present and future,” says Thomson. “Ensuring these jewels are conserved will contribute to healthy and culturally rich communities for years to come."

He also outlined future plans for a heritage strategy that would ensure BC’s historic places to remain an active and dynamic part of BC.

Part of the money provided will go towards transforming the business model of Heritage BC. It was also announced the society would now be the sole fund advisor to the $5 million Heritage Legacy Fund.

The province currently recognizes over 3,500 historic places, with hundreds more awaiting designation.
