Family Day a boon for Big White

The new BC Family Day holiday held February 11 brought record crowds together at Big White Ski Resort this past weekend.

The resort experienced a financial windfall as BC families took advantage of the new long weekend, with the mountain hosting a weekend long celebration including an outdoor carnival Sunday which was “a treat for all ages."

“We saw a four-fold increase in occupancy over the weekend compared to last year. We were full and still had people looking for places to stay,” says David Web, President of Rent Chalets.

Big White Ski Resort Ltd. reported a 67% increase in skier visits, 62% increase in Ski School visits and accommodation up 56%.

“There were smiles all around the resort” says Michael J. Ballingall, Senior Vice President.

“I was most encouraged by the amount of first time visitors and those coming from the lower mainland. I’m sure the entire ski industry will report healthy growth and the conversion of new skiers and snowboarders.”

Another big draw occurred over the weekend when a new speed record was set at the 18-metre tall ice tower located at Big White.

Will Gadd was at the mountain teaching an advanced ice climbing clinic when he noticed the speed record was set last year by an Australian, Earl Quinlan at 16 seconds.

In front of a group of excited spectators, Gadd accomplished the task in a time of 13.0 seconds.
