Schroeder, Schneider put out Flames
Feb 9, 2013 / 9:54 pm
Rookie Jordan Schroeder scored his first two NHL goals and Cory Schneider stopped 33 shots as the Vancouver Canucks rallied to defeat the Calgary Flames 5-1 Saturday night.
Schroeder and Alex Burrows scored just 27 seconds apart in the second period to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead. Schroeder collected his second goal late in the third period off a Mason Raymond rebound.
Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin added two assists to give him 755 career points. That leaves him one point behind former captain Markus Naslund's franchise-leading total of 756.
Schroeder scored on the power play for his first NHL goal. He had scored the winner in a 2-1 shootout victory against the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 1, but that didn't officially count as a goal.
Chris Higgins and Kevin Bieksa also scored for the Canucks (7-2-2), who won their fifth consecutive game as Schneider made his second straight start.
Lee Stempniak scored for the Flames (3-4-2), who wrapped a three-game road 2-1 with the loss.
Leland Irving, filling in for injured starter Miikka Kiprusoff, made his first ever back-to-back start. He stopped 26 shots.
With the Canucks trailing 1-0, Burrows tied the game at 8:34 of the second. Henrik Sedin fired a shot that Irving stopped but the puck lay underneath him as a diving Burrows poked it into the net. Daniel Sedin also earned an assist on the play.
Vancouver went on the power play just 15 second later when Roman Cervenka was sent off for hooking. Schroeder, a 2009 first-round draft pick, put Vancouver ahead to stay when he tipped an Alex Edler shot past Irving. The Canucks had managed just two goals on 34 previous power plays.
Bieksa made it 3-1 with a blast from the point that appeared to hit someone and sail past Irving.
Stempniak opened the scoring late in the first period. Blake Comeau fed a pass from behind the net to Matt Stajan, who let go a blast. Schneider made the first stop but Stempniak, camped at the side of the net, slapped home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season.
Jannik Hansen had a great chance to tie the game before the first period ended. Raymond slid him a pretty pass but the Dane missed a wide-open corner of the net.
Notes: The Flames were also playing without centres Mikael Backlund (knee) and Mike Cammalleri (hip), plus forward Sven Baertschi (hip). ... Canucks' general manager Mike Gillis said in an interview Friday that unless he gets the right offer for goaltender Roberto Luongo he is prepared to keep both Luongo and Schneider for the remainder of the season. ...David Booth, who has missed the entire season with a groin injury, skated with the Canucks Saturday morning. Ryan Kesler, recovering from both shoulder and wrist surgery, has been skating for a week.
