7:54 a.m. Gordon Molendyk, media relations for Vernon/North Okanagan RCMP:

Last evening at 6:00 PM, Vernon RCMP members responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the 7800 block of Pleasant Valley Rd, in Vernon. There were three people in the place at the time. Two people a male and female left the house leaving the suspect as the lone occupant.

Officers made contact with the 41 year old suspect who repeatedly told police that he had knives and would stab police if they entered residence and then he would harm himself.

The suspect appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The suspect claimed to have self-inflicted knife wounds on his hand and arm. RCMP negotiators as well as members of the South East District Emergency Response Team were called in to assist. The suspect was taken into custody without incident just before 05:00 this morning his injuries were found to be limited to small cut on his hand.

He has been taken to Vernon hospital for treatment and examination.

Charges are being considered in this case as investigators continue to work on this file.

7:00 a.m. Canadian Press update

An almost 11 hour stake out by Vernon RCMP has ended with a man taken into custody.

The incident started at around 6 p.m. Thursday when a woman called Mounties to report her drunken boyfriend had arrived at her home, and she feared he might hurt several puppies in the house.

Sgt. Dan Wendland says the first officers on the scene called for backup to negotiate with the man, in his early 40s, because he refused to come out of the home.

The girlfriend and a tenant had already managed to leave safely.

Things ended after 4:30 a.m. when the man was arrested without incident.

There's no word yet on possible charges.

10:41 p.m. update: Jeff reports, "Just drove by the area. Police still on site. Fire dept. and ambulance staging at the weigh scale."

10 p.m. update: Normand Belanger reports, 'Pleasant Valley road was still closed and nearby, at the weigh scale on Highway 97 two ambulances and two fire trucks and one water tanker are all on standby."

Vernon RCMP are on the scene of what is being described only as a disturbance in the 7800 block of Highway 97 near Swan Lake.

RCMP spokesman, Gord Molendyk, says police were called to the home around 6 p.m. after receiving reports a disturbance.

Upon arriving an individual outside went inside the home.

Molendyk says at that point police began communications with the individual.

He says early reports of shots being fired from inside the home at police are erroneous.

"There have been no shots fired," says Molendyk.

Molendyk says one person exited the home after 8 p.m. and was taken into custody for questioning.

RCMP continue to communicate with the second individual inside the home.

It is believed he is the only person remaining inside.

Molendyk says police don't believe the individual has a gun but do consider the person to be armed.

At one point Highway 97 was blocked off and traffic re-routed along Pleasant Valley Road.

The highway has since been re-opened.

We'll have more information when it becomes available.
