The 50 pounds of marijuana taken during the bust.

A 46-year-old male was arrested Friday afternoon at the BC ferries Departure Bay terminal with approximately 50 pounds of marijuana that has a street value of approximately $120,000 dollars.

The arrest occurred on Friday February 1 at approximately 12:30 p.m.

It was the result of an investigation that spanned several months. The investigation was initiated by the Nanaimo RCMP General  Investigation Section and focused on the movement of money and marijuana between central Vancouver Island and the Yukon. The subject male was closely watched by plain clothes officers and when it was determined he was preparing to leave the Island, officers arrested him without incident at his car in the ferry terminal.

The individual has no previous criminal convictions and was released later that same day on a Promise to Appear. Police are recommending charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking with a court date of May 14, 2013.

"Our investigators believe the arrest of this person and subsequent seizure  will cause a significant disruption in the flow of marijuana between Nanaimo and the Yukon. This investigation is not over and further arrests may be expected,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
