Canada is contributing an additional $25 million to help people displaced by the Syrian crisis.

The money will help provide food, water, shelter, medical care and safety for the estimated 700,000 refugees who that have fled Syria during its 22-month-old civil war.

International Co-operation Minister Julian Fantino announced the new funds at an international donors' conference in Kuwait.

It brings Canada's contribution to the Syrian crisis to $48 million.

The United Nations received $900 million in pledges from Gulf countries at the Kuwait meeting

The UN is appealing for $1.5 billion as the civil war, which has killed an estimated 60,000, creates a regional crisis and people flee to neighbouring countries.
