A captain from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and area dignitaries will be on hand to serve customers at the Wendy’s restaurant in Penticton on Wednesday.
The Okanagan city is one of several participating in Wendy’s Dreamlift Day, a fundraising event to benefit the Sunshine Foundation of Canada.
All the proceeds from the day’s sales in participating restaurants, as well as staff, management and owner’s wages will be earmarked for the next BC interior Dreamlift to Disneyland, tentatively scheduled for December, 2013.
Every other year, enough funds are generated to send a plane load of special children with severe physical disabilities or life threatening illnesses to Disneyland for a day.
“This is something absolutely wonderful for these kids, something they might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience,” said Mayor Dan Ashton. “I’ve seen pictures of the kids, when they get there they get treated like gold.”
Ashton will be working one of the shifts at the restaurant, as will Orange County Sheriff’s Cpt. Mike Toledo.
Other cities involved in the Southern Interior include Kelowna, West Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops and Salmon Arm.
The success of the day continues to grow, with more than$114,000 raised at the 2012 18th annual Dreamlift Day.
