Green Leader speaks at Summerhill

Green Party Leader of Canada Elizabeth May spoke at Summerhill Winery Sunday about the challenges she and her supporters will face in the coming years.

“The May election here in BC will be a turning point for the Green Party,” she said.

“Harper’s taken a wrecking ball to our system.”

May currently represents the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands but she is the first and only Green Party candidate to be elected to the House of Commons.

As she points out, however, there are benefits to standing alone.

“When someone is elected to Parliament,” she said, “their allegiance is to their Party.”

“I’m in a position right now to do the right thing.  I read all the legislation and I see how the current administration is dismantling our legal system.”

During her 20-minute address, May stressed the importance of educating not only her fellow MP’s but the general public as well.

“We need to mobilize,” she said.  “(Conservative MP) Ron Cannan won’t stand up to Harper.”

The recent Idle No More demonstrations that have taken place across the Okanagan and across the country were also mentioned, as was Canada’s relationship with China, and the pipeline proposal.

Former City Council and Green Party member, Angela Reid-Nagy, organized the event, which included an organic brunch and a question-and-answer period.

“As the sole Green Party member, (Elizabeth May) has been doing a great job holding the Conservative Party accountable,” she said.

“I thought it was important to host an event that is open to the public so people will have an opportunity to get to know her policies.”
