Fire crews were called to a bedroom fire in the lower floor of a duplex, Friday, around 10:45 p.m.

According to Platoon Captain Laurie Serres, crews arrived on scene at the home in the 700 block of Burne Ave to find a fire contained to the bedroom of the residence.

"There was no fire extension to any other rooms other than some smoke. The fire was extinguished with very little water," says Serres.

The bedroom suffered extensive smoke damage and the loss is estimated to be around $8000. The owner of the house is insured, but the resident living in the bedroom was not and lost his possessions.

He is currently under the care of emergency services.

According to Serres the fire was discovered by residents who smelled burning plastic.

"There were smoke alarms in the unit, but they did not activate as there was not enough smoke to set of the alarm. The bedroom door was closed, which prevented the smoke from entering the rest of the house."

A news tip says it might have been a laptop that started the fire, but officially the cause of the fire is yet unknown.  An investigation is currently underway.
