Burnt truck targeted by bomb

What was first thought to be a simple truck fire has turned out to be something a lot more.

Police have now confirmed the vehicle -- which burned in a parking lot on Lawrence Avenue early last Friday morning -- was bombed.

The fire in the late 2000's model Ford Explorer started from the detonation of a 'low order explosive device.'

At the time of the fire police would say only the fire was suspicious.

Cst. Kris Clark says police do not believe this to be a random act of vandalism, however, no motive has been determined.

"There is nothing to suggest at this time as to the reason why the specific vehicle was targeted," says Clark.

While the device did not have the power to cause major damage Clark says it had the potential in cause injury if someone was inside or near the vehicle.

Clark says the owner of the vehicle is known to police as a local businessman.

He wouldn't elaborate.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
