BCFGA set to elect new president
After what can only be described as a tumultuous year, the BC Fruit Growers Association will elect a new president Saturday during its 124th annual convention in Penticton.
Vernon grower Jeet Dukhia and Kelowna's Fred Steele are the only candidates for the position.
Dukhia, elected to the vice-president's chair a year ago, took over as president December 3 when embattled president Kirpal Boparai stepped down.
Boparai, who succeeded Joe Sardinha after seven years, had his Okanagan Tree Fruit Cooperative membership suspended when it was discovered he had sold fruit to Ontario.
At the time, Boparai stated he and other growers were fed up with OTFC and he had no choice but to sell his fruit where he saw fit.
Boparai cited a poor return for growers and mismanagement within the OTFC for his decision to sell his apples to eastern companies.
Voting on a new president will take place Saturday afternoon at the close of the convention in the Penticton Lakeshore Resort.
