Time to get rid of that Christmas tree

The Vernon Fire Rescue Services is hosting a Christmas Tree Drive-Thru this weekend to raise money for the B.C. Firefighters Burn Fund.

Residents are encouraged to drop off their Christmas tree at Fire Station 1, located at 3401 30th Street between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The trees will be left onsite at the fire hall and will be chipped by CUPE early next week.

In exchange, off duty fire fighters will be handing out coffees to the public along with a vacuum of their vehicle.

Donations are appreciated and the money raised will go directly to the Burn Fund.

Firefighters in Kelowna, West Kelowna and Penticton are holding similar events this weekend.

The Burn Fund is a registered charity established in 1978 by the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association. More than 3,800 professional fire fighters from fifty-three communities in British Columbia and Yukon dedicate their time and skills to support burn survivors and increase the public’s knowledge about fire and burn safety issues through the work the Burn Fund does with its Burn Awareness, Research and Prevention Programs.

If you are unable to bring your tree by the fire hall this weekend, residents of Vernon, Coldstream and B.X. are encouraged to drop off their tree in the vacant lot next to St. John’s Ambulance at 47th Avenue and 20th Street until Jan. 13.

Christmas trees will not be picked up with residential garbage.

Trees can also be taken to Regional landfills free of charge until the end of the month.
