As we end the year of 2012…I thought I would do a little indulging and list some of those musicians that moved me. We begin with the growing Talent that is coming out of Kelowna:
(And in no particular order.)
A unique group of musicians, The Kettle Valley Brakemen fronted by Jack Godwin has been educating and entertaining us for over fifteen years about the area’s history, and set to song. In particular, the way the Railway has shaped this part of the BC Interior. As music is the universal language, Jack and his fellow Brakemen remind us of the rich heritage we all are part of…here’s to the Kettle Valley Brakemen and hopefully fifteen more years of musical history.
A true visionary in the local music scene, best known as Rann Berry, this local musician and business person has entertained valley residents for countless nights. His group of “The Random Act” continue to enjoy success, and his more recent vision is also gaining success: “Rann Berry & The One Hit Wonders” is a glorious trip down a musical memory lane in a true Vegas-style fashion. Many talented musicians populate this amazing Act! 2013 should see Kevin continue to develop this musical vision in greater proportions and we all will be the beneficiaries.
Another minstrel in your midst is Steve Jones…an extraordinary Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist who is a born storyteller. Steve consistently creates sensitive and sometimes humorous songs that always touch the heart. Whenever I hear a Steve Jones composition, it certainly moves me.
A group of young talented musicians that move me, including an unabashed excitement, are the young foursome that make up The Flu. Recently, for another magazine I write for, I reviewed the fourth release of a Northern European group; “Hardcore Superstar”…whose energy levels are through the roof, and that is a comparison that is totally true in regards to The Flu. It is almost unbelievable that four musicians can create that amount of energy on stage and on record. The group is still working on their debut album, recording the final tracks in January and February. Keep your eye on these lads, as The Flu will become an International success!
Of course, there are more talented musicians that have moved me during 2012 from this area of the valley; however I am limited in my space. Suffice it to write: The Kelowna and area music scene is very healthy, and home to some astounding Talent, and I am truly humbled to be able to write about them and share my thoughts and feelings to you! To all in Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley…have a Happy and above all Safe New Year, and see you in 2013!
Next week, we will look at some of the International Recording Artists that have moved me, including this individual….
