The Habitat for Humanity Kelowna affiliate today announced it will be opening a ReStore to sell donated building materials at affordable prices. Over 70 ReStores are operated by Habitat for Humanity affiliates across Canada, but this store will be the first in the Okanagan.

Christina Nuffield, chair of Habitat’s ReStore committee, predicts that the store will open to the public in March 2013. The store will be located at 1793 Ross Road in West Kelowna near the intersection of Bartley and Hwy. 97. The premises were formerly occupied by City Furniture.

Commencing in the New Year, on January 5, Habitat for Humanity volunteers will be at the store on Saturday mornings from 9 to 12 to accept donations of good quality building materials and reusable items such as kitchen sinks and lighting. A complete list of acceptable donations is available at the affiliate’s website. The affiliate welcomes donations from the construction and building supply community as well.

Nuffield plans to hold information sessions in mid-January for persons interested in becoming involved with this new community effort. The store will mostly be staffed by volunteers.

“ReStores are a win-win-win,” explains Edward McLean, chairman of Habitat for Humanity Kelowna’s board of directors. “The proceeds help us build more houses, useful material is kept out of the landfill, and shoppers can find bargains for their home or cottage renovation projects.”

Store renovations are being supervised by Jazel Homes.
