Drugs may be cause for head-on crash
An unidentified man is under investigation for being impaired by drug following a head-on collision on Springfield Road late Sunday night.
RCMP Cst. Kris Clark says the driver exhibited symptoms of impairment at the crash scene.
The incident, involving a BMW and Dodge Dakota occurred in the 2800 block of Springfield Road at around 11 p.m.
"Apparently the BMW couldn't make the corner and collided with the pick-up truck head-on," says Clark.
"It was later determined the driver of the BMW was exhibiting symptoms of impairment and a Drug Recognition Expert was used to conduct several tests."
Clark says tests conducted are similar to field sobriety tests conducted on suspected drinking drivers.
"You are checking coordination and motor skills, that sort of thing. It's a tool that is used to determine if someone is on a central nervous system depressant or stimulant," says Clark.
"A conclusion at the end of the test is made by a Drug Recognition Expert as to whether charges are recommended."
Clark says the suspect can also submit a urine or blood sample.
He says police are awaiting final test results before determining if charges will be recommended.
The sole occupant of the BMW and driver and passenger of the pick-up all escaped injury.
