A candlelight vigil will be held tonight, Thursday, at Okanagan College in Vernon, to remember victims of gender-based violence.

Dec. 6 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. Established in 1991, the day marks the anniversary of the murders in 1989 of 14 young women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal.

  At 4 p.m., "Polytechnique," the film based on the Montreal massacre, will be shown in the Lecture Theatre at the college.

At 6 p.m. there will be a ceremony including guest speakers from the Vernon City Council, Okanagan Indian Band and the Women's Transition House, followed by the candlelight vigil and a walk on campus.

Eric Reist, general manager for the Vernon Student Association at the college, said the vigil is being held to not only remember the women who died in Montreal, but also remember the women who have been killed or gone missing on BC's Highway of Tears.

"We are remembering the women who have lost their lives as a result of violence," he said. "We also see it as a day of action as well, looking at how we can eliminate violence against women."
