Vernon and North Okanagan News
A 31-year-old illegal alien is being held under an Immigration Detention Order in Vernon after racking up a large cab bill Friday night.
A cabbie from Lake Country dropped the intoxicated man off at the Vernon RCMP Detachment Friday evening saying the man didn't appear to know where he was going and ran up an $80 fare while the taxi drove around aimlessly.
RCMP spokesman Gord Molendyk says the man provided three different names prompting police to contact Canadian Border Services to determine if they had any information pertaining to any of the names provided.
Molendyk says they had nothing on record.
"One of our officers spoke to him in Spanish and learned he was not lawfully in the country and that he did not have a passport or any other form of identification"' says Molendyk.
"The suspect said he had crossed the border through the mountains of Montana on foot and that he has been unlawfully in Canada since June."
The man is expected to be transported to Vancouver today (Monday) for a deportation hearing.
