An Internet fraudster has turned up in the North Okanagan.
Salmon Arm RCMP received a complaint about a scam that centered on an Internet dating site. It involved a male suspect befriending a local resident, claiming he lived in a neighbouring city. The suspect had the victim send large amounts of money through Western Union transactions that cannot be traced.
The investigation has found that the suspect lives outside of North America, which makes the incident difficult to prosecute.
Police are warning the public to be very cautious when asked for any sums of money by someone not known to them. Fraudsters use any number of lies and stories to obtain money from their victims and can be very convincing.
Their advice – if it sounds too good to be true, it always is.
