The competition at Gold Medal Plates Vancouver was fierce as 10 of British Columbia’s top chefs competed for the coveted Gold Medal.
Despite the exceptional dishes created by his competitors, Chef Mark Filatow from Waterfront Wines in Kelowna rose above the rest and was awarded the Gold!
Hosted at the Westin Bayshore, each chef partnered with a local wine producer to pair an appetizer-sized dish that was served to over 450 people, in addition to the esteemed judges (James Chatto, Sid Cross, Andrew Morrison, Lesley Stowe, Barbara-Jo McIntosh, John Bishop and Rob Feenie).
Chef Filatow celebrates local producers everyday at Waterfront Wines and his winning dish was no exception as he served up Charcoal Grilled Bar 'M' Ranch Lamb Loin, Moroccan Braised Belly, 'Neck' Merguez and Potato Doughnut.
As a trained Sommelier, Chef Filatow took the time to ensure a perfect pairing as well with the 2010 Syrah from Orofino Vineyards.
Head judge James Chatto noted “The loin was simply but perfectly prepared, grilled over charcoal but still pink and juicy. Chef Filatow’s wine was another remarkably accurate match.”
“It was an honour to be asked to participate once again in such a prestigious competition,” says Chef Filatow.
“To receive the Gold Medal is truly outstanding for our team and we are very excited to compete against Canada’s best in February and capture the Gold for our hometown crowd.”
Gold Medal Plates is the ultimate celebration of Canadian excellence in cuisine, wine, athletic achievement and the arts.
The competition has raised more than $6M for Canadian Olympic athletes since its inception in 2004.
Competitions were held in 10 major Canadian cities this fall, with the winners from each city competing in the Canadian Culinary Championships in Kelowna February 8-9, 2013.
