Overpass down to final stages

Motorists commuting between West Kelowna and Kelowna can expect one final set of traffic interruptions as construction nears completion on the Nancee Way Overpass.

Project spokesperson, Evelyn Lube, says evening lane closures will be in effect beginning Wednesday night for five to seven days for final paving and road alignment.

Lane closures will be in effect from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. - weather permitting.

The paving work was scheduled to begin at the end of last week but was cancelled due to the snow.

"We are paving for the final (road) alignment and transitions onto the overpass structure both northbound and southbound," says Lube.

"It's getting wet and cool so as long as mother nature cooperates we should have it done within a few working days."

Lube says motorists heading southbound out of Kelowna Thursday morning will notice a shift in traffic pattern.

She says typically, traffic does move a bit slower when traffic patterns change so motorists should give themselves a little extra time Thursday morning.

"Once that is all complete and the traffic is aligned onto the overpass then they can complete excavation of the Nancee Way overpass," says Lube.

"The overpass is completely built but, on the east side there is still an earth wall. That's the last bit of excavation needed to open up the overpass."

Lube says traffic on Highway 97 won't be affected by the work on Nancee Way.

"We will have a longer merge lane coming off Westside Road that will extend that merge lane to get onto the highway which people will be happy about. We should have traffic flowing nicely through there in the next week or so."

Lube adds the 60km construction speed limit will remain in effect because there will still be equipment in the area.

The entire project should be complete by early December.

Meantime, a portion of Boucherie Road between Highway 97 and Hudson Road is scheduled to re-open Friday morning.

Traffic has been detoured around the area since July in order to install sewer for about 1,500 customers, and at the same time upgrade the road to 'Wine Route' standards.
