A Penticton man has been found guilty in a brutal assault on his grandparents that left his grandfather with serious injuries to his head, ribs and knees.

Gregory Ailles was arrested after the attack in 2008 in which he tied up Grant and Lois Allies in their home and used a metal pipe to beat his grandfather.

He was convicted of unlawful confinement and aggravated assault of his then-76-year-old grandfather and unlawful confinement and assault of his grandmother, who has since died.

Ailles was also found guilty of theft under $5,000 and possession of firearms while he was cleared of three other charges.

He will face a psychiatric assessment before his next court appearance, which is scheduled for Jan. 3.

There's no word on when sentencing will be scheduled.

The trial, which began last week, included witness testimony from Grant Ailles, as well as other family members.  

The accused also took the stand in his own defence. Audio and video recordings from Lois Ailles, Grant's wife and the only other person to witness the attack in their Balfour Street home, was also ruled to be admissible by Justice Alison Beames.

According to much of the testimony, Grant Ailles was a shell of his former self after the beating. He is wheelchair bound, blind and in need of constant care.
