Rock smashes windshield, kills driver

Highway 18 east of Lake Cowichan was closed for several hours today (Wednesday), following the death of a motorist who was struck by a rock that crashed through the windshield of his pick up truck.

At around 9:30 this morning, Lake Cowichan RCMP and BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) responded to a motor vehicle incident on Highway 18, near the Skutz Falls turn off.

Reports indicated that the driver of a pick up truck was seriously injured by a rock which had fallen from a loaded commercial logging truck.

Preliminary investigation indicates that two commercial logging trucks were traveling eastbound, in close proximity to one another, shortly before 9:30 am.

Witness reports indicate that a rock fell off the first of these two logging trucks, bounced off the roadway, and entered the driver side windshield of a pick up truck traveling westbound.

The driver of the pick up truck, a 52-year-old Duncan resident, was seriously injured as a result of the rock's impact.  His female passenger was not injured.

The driver was transported to the Cowichan District Hospital by BCAS with serious injuries.

The man succumbed to his injuries a short time later in hospital.

The driver of the logging truck involved in this incident did not stop at the scene.  It is likely that he/she was unaware of the incident unfolding behind them.

Officers from the Lake Cowichan RCMP, RCMP South Island Traffic Services, and the Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement team (CVSE) are currently working to confirm the identify of the logging truck, and driver involved.  The identity of the second logging truck driver is also unknown at this time.
