DNA expert testifies at Hyatt trial
An RCMP DNA forensic expert testified Tuesday that blood found on the clothing of the teen accused of stabbing to death Ashlee Hyatt, belonged to Hyatt.
The accused , now 18, is facing a second degree murder charge in the death of Hyatt, then 16, at a Peachland party in June of 2010.
The witness stated blood on the teen's jeans, as well as a sweater, matched Hyatt's DNA profile, with the odds of that blood belonging to someone else being 1 in 1.6 trillion.
Blood on the jeans and sweater, as well as on a shirt belonging to the teen hosting the party, also belonged to the accused, according to the witness testimony.
On a boot sent into the lab from the crime scene, there were also signs of blood from both Hyatt and the accused, while swabs taken from the roadside were also linked to Hyatt.
On the tip of the folding knife blade, allegedly used in the stabbing, there was more blood linked to Hyatt.
However DNA analysis of biological materials, like skin cells on the knife handle, showed the materials to be from at least three individuals, with the major component from an unknown male.
Several crown witnesses have testified since the trial began, among them the host of the party, another teen who was at the scene and the couple who broke up the party. All have said they witnessed fighting between the accused and other teens at the party leading up to the stabbing.
The crown is expected to call two more witnesses in the case. The trial resumes today.
