October rains in number two

Despite a late month surge, Kelowna fell just short of establishing a rainfall record for the month of October.

According to Doug Lundquist with Environment Canada last month was the second wettest October on record.

"The cold front came through about 11 o'clock last night (Wednesday) which was good because it held off for the kids. It rained early in the day, it stopped and then came again in the latter part of the day," says Lundquist.

"We had 64mm of rain in October. The record was 66.1."

The October rainfall record was established in 1973.

While 64mm of rain fell over the Central Okanagan in October, the first rainfall didn't occur until closer to the middle of the month.

Lundquist says that's not unusual.

"Usually the beginning of October is dry. The summer convection usually tapers off mid August, and September really dries out.  October is one of the driest months in the Okanagan," says Lundquist.

"By November the winter rains are coming in with the Pacific storms."

Looking ahead, Lundquist expects the next week or so to provide much of the same as we have been experiencing, wet and mild, although the bulk of the rain should fall to the north of us.

He says highs are expected in the 10C to 14C range with overnight lows 4C to 9C, both warmer than normal.

The normal range for the beginning of November is a low of 1C and a high of 7C.
