Trunk or Treat, a Halloween alternative

First Lutheran Church and School is offering a unique Halloween event this year.

“Trunk or Treat” is a safe, family-friendly alternative to trick-or-treating targeting families with children up to 10 years of age.  While this type of event has a strong following in the US, it has yet to take off here in Canada.

“With Halloween being on a school day, we want to present the community with an event that takes place during daylight hours and is safe and fun for young families,” explains Admissions Advisor, Heather Sandager.

“Our school parking lot will be transformed into a ‘neighbourhood’ of parked cars where children are safe to trick-or-treat from parked car to parked car.  Families can come and enjoy the festivities in the fresh air and still be home in time for dinner and their regular bedtime routine.”

The event takes place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on Halloween day in the church parking lot at 4091 Lakeshore Road.

The First Lutheran Christian School Grade 5-7 Leadership Team is using the event to further serve the community of Kelowna.

When the team heard of a need for blankets at Kelowna’s Gospel Mission, they took it upon themselves to sponsor a car trunk where they will be collecting blankets to donate to the Mission.  Their goal is to fill teacher Jamie Henderson’s entire car.  The team will be accepting donations of clean, new or gently-used warm blankets at the event.

Families can expect over 40 vehicles set up for the “Trunk or Treat”.  All of the trunks are sponsored by church and school families, with the exception of the Kelowna Fire Department.

Members of the Fire Prevention team will be set up with a truck, presenting Halloween and fire safety tips for parents and children.

The Lower Mission Starbucks will also be providing coffee to keep parents warm.
