The mother of one of the survivors of Thursday's terrible crash in Peachland, which killed two people, calls it a miracle that her son is alive.
"It's a miracle," says Shelly Urlacher, whose son Ryan was released from Kelowna General Hospital a day after the crash.
"He doesn't have a broken bone, he is walking around the house. Basically he is (still) in pain, his heels are sore, but he's a miracle boy."
Urlacher says the outpouring of support from his friends in the community has been uplifting. Her home has been serving as a place of gathering and healing for many of those directly affected by Thursday's tragedy.
"The grief will stick with us forever. The closeness of this town and the kids who have been at my house...people just holding each other. I've never seen anything like it. These kids are so close and everybody is concerned. I just pray for them."
Urlacher admits she has conflicting emotions, grieving with the families whose children are either lost or suffering, while feeling grateful her son is alive and well.
She was home when she first heard the wail of the sirens heading up Princeton Avenue.
"I heard all of the emergency vehicles head up and I couldn't get a hold of him. It was like I just knew."
She says Ryan was awake after the crash and was seen holding and caring for his girlfriend, Brianna Frohlich, when the first witness arrived on the scene.
"Ryan had crawled over and was holding Brianna for about half an hour in the rain. I was so proud of him...he didn't just look out for himself."
Urlacher added that the witness told her family that he "had never seen such true love and concern for a girl in my life."
Brianna Frohlich remains in hospital on Sunday with her family by her side.
"Brianna is stable and she is still in ICU," says her father, Dave Prosser. "She has a head injury and it's a time thing. They're just waiting to bring her around."
