Checkmate Cabs hopes to have seven more vehicles on the road by the end of the year.

The Kelowna taxi company has submitted an application to the Passenger Transportation Board seeking to add six conventional taxis and one accessible cab to its fleet.

Checkmate Cabs currently has 20 conventional and two accessible cabs on the road.

Company manager, Amy Wiltshire, says the city supports the application.

City Council is expected to endorse a request Monday to send a letter to the board endorsing the application.

Wiltshire says her company needs more vehicles in order to serve both an aging population and a vibrant young community in the Central Okanagan.

She says her company is servicing Interior Health exclusively.

At the present time, Wiltshire says there are about 100 cabs in the city.

A decision by the PTB is expected sometime later this fall.
