Mantler to be tried Nov. 26

Suspended Kelowna Mountie Geoff Mantler will stand trial in late November for the assault charge of a Kelowna man.

Counsel agreed on a Nov. 26 start date for the trial in BC Provincial Court Thursday, with an expected duration of about two weeks.

Mantler faces one count of assault causing bodily harm to Buddy Tavares in January, 2011. The incident was caught on video by a Castanet reporter and received extended media play.

Defence counsel Neville McDougall told the court he would call up one expert and two civilians during his arguments, expected to last about one week.

Crown counsel Will Burrows, who appeared in court by telephone, said there weren’t any Charter or statement issues; however, he said the Crown had issues with the defence’s calling of witnesses from the golf club, which is where the original 9/11 call was made when Tavares is alleged to have used a shotgun to scare geese away.

Mantler and another Mountie attended the call.
