Farts: socially acceptable

Acceptable, to social networks the Internet and the App store that is.

A Kelowna couple hopes 'Farts' is their ticket to fame and fortune.

"Field Guide To Farts Volume 1: Fartanimals Discovered," is the title of a book created by writer Deanna Kent and illustrator Neil Hooson.

The book, described as a cross between the Captain Underwear and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, was launched on-line about a month ago.

The series is designed for kids 8 to 11.

"The whole premise of the book is our hero (Artemis U. Flatsch) is capturing a new species (Fartanimals) he has just discovered from a mysterious letter his grandfather left him," says Kent in describing the book.

Despite the title, Kent says the book is more than a collection of jokes about bodily functions.

"This book is a classic tale of adventure with a hero who goes on a quest and must overcome an evil enemy and a series of obstacles and challenges along the way."

Kent says she and Hooson first came up with the idea at Christmas of 2010.

"When we started talking about it at dinner, our kids started laughing and we thought 'this might be really fun.' For the last 18 months we have been flushing it out and my partner (Hooson) has been sketching away."

The book has been available at Amazon.com for about a month and in the iBookstore for two weeks.

It has already hit the 'New and Notable' list at the iBookstore.

"We were tickled pink when we saw that," added Kent who says they have not given up on having the book eventually published.

"We are not adverse to traditional publishing. That may come out eventually but for now we just wanted to get our idea out and rolling."

She says they have extensive storylines and outlines for three more books. She hopes volume two will roll out in early 2013.

"We're probably going to give it a six month window after that for the other ones."

Kent says she doesn't want to stop after the fourth book.

"We would love to see an interactive book from this and I would love to see toys and the whole gamut from it. There are so many possibilities as long as we can dream and persevere."
