Vipers edge Warriors in OT thriller
Oct 7, 2012 / 9:03 am
The Vernon Vipers needed overtime to knock off the West Kelowna Warriors in BCHL action Saturday night in Vernon.
Colton Sparrow scored on Tyler Briggs at 4:11 of overtime to lift Vernon to a 2-1 win at the Wesbild Centre.
After a lopsided victory over Trail on Friday, the Warriors struggled to score despite out shooting the Vipers 34-31.
West Kelowna had an apparent goal waved off by referee Brandon Liefke in the first period. The goal light went on briefly, but Liefke ruled the whistle blew before the puck entered the net.
Nobody disputed Adam Tambellini's opening goal when he fired a shot past Briggs at 13:02 to make it 1-0.
After a scoreless second period, West Kelowna tied it when Seb Lloyd scored on a breakaway early in the third.
"I think we’re really happy with the way we played defensively," says Lloyd.
"Even offensively, we’re happy with the way we played...it was just a matter of the puck not finding the back of the net tonight."
Vernon improves to 3-4-0-2 with the win, three points behind the Warriors (4-2-0-3), who are tied with Merritt for second in the Interior Conference.
Their next action is a home-and-home series with Langley next weekend.
The Vipers are in Salmon Arm Friday and Chilliwack on Saturday.
